Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update (January – February, 2021)

February 26, 2021

COVID UPDATE

We are reporting NO NEW positive COVID-19 cases today!!

WE KNOW WHAT’S ON YOUR MINDS…IT’S ON OURS TOO 😉

Receiving vaccines, positivity rate declines, the number of vaccines administered locally and nationally, restoring communal dining, beauty shop reopening, resident activities, residents roaming freely throughout the facility…and importantly, family visitation have given us all pause to say, ‘what does it mean? What’s next?”

And you rightfully have asked us that question! We desperately want to lay out a plan getting us from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’ and some kind of normal. We don’t have all the facts currently to do that. But we are gathering all the information we will need. I can assure you!

You are privy to much of the same information we are, and what we hear gives us cause for hope. We are hopeful things will continue to progress to the anticipated time in June where there will be enough vaccine to provide shots for anyone who wants one. That would be a key milestone.

However, we are in the business of assessing and mitigating risk for our dear residents- and there remains ample risk which prohibits us from aggressively moving forward:

  • While we and others have been vaccinated, the shot is 94% effective in preventing the virus from being transmitted-we can still transmit the virus
  • Because they are only 94% effective, we must continue to wear our masks, maintain social distancing, and wash our hands
  • We are anticipating a 4th phase of virus outbreak yet to come with new virus variants from South Africa and Brazil for which our vaccine is even less effective around 50-60% and even more easily transmitted
  • And lastly, while you may have had your shot, you don’t know if the person next to you has their shot-leaving you vulnerable

So, having outlined our ongoing risks, you need to know we are thinking way outside the box for ways to connect you with your loved ones…as soon as possible!

For example, we envision expanding visitation time from 30 minutes to longer periods so you can enjoy your time more. We also envision a time where in room visitation may be a reality assuming all have been vaccinated, wear masks, and social distancing. And SPRING is on the way which opens outdoor potentials as well.

So, we are hopeful! We are trying our best to identify ways to connect you in a more meaningful way – while maintaining the health and safety of everyone involved. That is our goal!

We have traveled this journey for a little over a year, the end of the race is within our grasp. After all this time successfully protecting ourselves from this vicious and cunning virus, rounding the last turn of the racetrack we don’t want to fall this close to the finish line! We’re sure you do not either 👌😇

Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.

COVID UPDATE

We are reporting NO NEW positive COVID-19 cases today!!

IT’S MORE THAN LIFE OR DEATH

After persevering for a year under COVID restrictions, we understand the temptation to throw caution to the wind; especially if you are relatively healthy or young or think we are coming out of the woods! When you are considering your choices, consider the following data we have received. Aside from the over 500,000 deaths in the United States, COVID-19 can impact you in devastating long-term ways.

Recent data from the CDC and WHO has indicated that over 30% (1 out of 3) of those people who have had mild to severe COVID-19 cases are now suffering from Post COVID Syndrome symptoms up to nine months after having COVID -19. This has also been referred to as Long Hauler’s Syndrome.

People suffering from Post Covid Syndrome are neither old nor young, bad cases nor mild cases, comorbidity or not, hospitalized or not hospitalized, immediately following or 2 or more months after having COVID-19. It has attacked all segments of the population who have had COVID-19.

The symptoms which have been noted are constant chest pain, painful nerve pain in hands and legs, seizures, tremors, vision loss, fatigue, loss of taste and/or smell, shortness of breath, cramping, low-grade fever, trouble performing daily activities, sleep loss, rashes, hair loss, teeth loss, and more.

Currently, health experts dealing with Post Covid Syndrome are treating symptoms as they work diligently to fully understand the underlying causes. Specialized clinics have opened around the country with a waitlist 30 days out to see a specialist.

1 out of 3 persons who have had COVID-19 are experiencing Post COVID Syndrome- up to 9 months after having had the virus. 8.5 million people. I don’t know about you-but life or death isn’t the only question any longer — long-term quality of life is. Be informed as you weigh the risks to wear your mask-wash your hands-maintain social distancing, and avoid risky situations.

Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.

COVID UPDATE

We are reporting NO NEW positive COVID-19 cases today!!

THE VERDICT IS IN!! WE ARE BLESSED! 🙏👍

Thank you for the numerous blessings which were shared…so great!! And so different! We knew it, but you have proven it- we are very blessed! We are going to share some of the varied and truly heartfelt blessings we received-and by doing so, you have blessed us all-we have it rather good! 😇

…” For an indoor toilet. Only when one has lived without such a convenience does one realize how blessed we are!”

… “I feel blessed to have a staff that cares enough to put others first and help when needed. I truly am blessed with a great job here at Hubbard, to put food on my table and staff to make it enjoyable (most days-wink wink 😉).”

…” Yesterday while eating lunch (or maybe another snack) I looked out my window and sitting on the Lilac bush was a beautiful bright red Cardinal! It had its’ head cocked towards me as if to say, “Cheer up, you could be out in this cold like me!” It brightened up my day and was a reminder that Spring is right around the corner! That is just one of my daily Blessings!”

…” The Love of a Family is Life’s Greatest Blessing! Family is anyone who loves and values your uniqueness.”

…” One of my greatest blessings during COVID has been the chance to bond with and get to know my 14-year-old granddaughter better by having her at my house daily for virtual learning. It has literally called me out of retirement as an educator and reminded me why I chose that profession in the first place, but this time having it personally benefit my family.”

…” Every day that I come to Hubbard is a blessing- the residents are the true blessings!”

…” A huge blessing in my life, my loved ones lives and the community is HUBBARD HILL!! Thank you to all of you for all you do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

…” Our family’s blessing is that Jaye and I have been able to work through Covid 19, and both of our sons are blessed to be able to work from their homes.”

…” My greatest blessing (very hard to narrow down so bear with me) …my husband for he gave me my 3 beautiful baby boys and a wonderful imperfect life! And one more…it’s a real blessing to have such a wonderful relationship with both my loving parents!

…” Hubbard Hill is my greatest blessing because caring for the residents is so rewarding and I get to do it alongside an amazing team! When you find a job you love, you never have to work a day in your life! 💜”

…” I feel blessed because my husband is getting such wonderful care in the Living Wisdom Center.”

…” One of our Assisted Living residents came by my chaplain’s office to ask if was alright to play the piano in the chapel. She’s a former church pianist and loves to come by occasionally to renew her love for her gift. In her request, she told me that even amid the pandemic restrictions, she was reminded that we need to count our blessings… and wanted to play the old hymn, “Count Your Blessing.” Count them “one by one” she told me.

“Of course,” I told her. “Count away.” So, I write this to that old hymn wafting from the chapel, grateful for the moment.

…” I am blessed that God chose to put me in a place to work where every day is an opportunity to grow and become a better person.”

That’s about half and will share the other half in another post! Thank you all once again. You have touched our hearts. What a way to end our week…

WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND?

From time to time we try to check in with our readers to see what’s on your mind, questions you may have or concerns surrounding COVID-19. So today we invite you to submit a question and we will do our best to provide an answer. Of course, there are topics we may not have an answer, but we will try! Submit to [email protected]. We will close submissions Friday. Thanks!

IT WORKS!

A new study from the CHPE (Center for Health Policy Evaluation), as reported by AHCA/NCAL, shows that COVID-19 cases decreased at a faster rate among both residents and staff at nursing homes that had completed their first vaccine clinic, compared to nursing homes that had not yet administered the vaccine.

This is good news for long-term care, vaccine advocacy campaigns, and people everywhere. The study further shows that:

  • Vaccinated nursing homes experienced a 48 percent decline in new resident cases three weeks after the first clinic, compared to a 21 percent decline among non-vaccinated nursing homes located in the same county.
  • Similarly, new staff cases declined by 33 percent in vaccinated nursing homes compared to 18 percent in non-vaccinated facilities.

The CDC’s recent report of interim clinical considerations echoes the efficacy of the vaccine at preventing severe and symptomatic COVID-19.

And God is able to make all grace abound to you so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.

COVID UPDATE

We are reporting NO NEW positive COVID-19 cases today!!

VACCINES

Reminder:  Tomorrow is COVID-19 VACCINATION DAY!  ONLY for persons who have already had their first shots and receiving their second and final shot.  And for persons who have already pre-registered for their first shot.  This is not open to the public.  Hubbard residents, staff, and volunteers only. For those receiving your second shot, do not forget your vaccine card you received at your last visit.

We look to see improvements in vaccine distribution around the country as more vaccine locations open in the coming weeks.  As we mentioned, persons over 65 may now register for their vaccine.

NEW VARIANTS

Likely you have heard about the 3 new COVID-19 variants from the U.K., Brazil, and South Africa.  There are many theories circulating now regarding vaccine effectiveness against these variants.  At this point, that is what they are-theories.  When we receive confirmation from the CDC or ISDH regarding these variants, we will pass along the information.

NEWS TOMORROW

Stay tuned tomorrow for some positive and exciting news which will make us all smile!!

COVID UPDATE

We are reporting NO NEW positive COVID-19 cases today!!

ELKHART COUNTY…IMPROVEMENTS!!

It has been a long time since we have been able to provide good news regarding COVID-19 and Elkhart County. Well, guess what? We can today!

Elkhart County COVID-19 positivity is down again to 7.7% from 7.9% yesterday!! As we have said all along, as Elkhart County goes-so go we in many cases. If Elkhart County continues the downward trend and remains below double digits through next Monday, we will be able to reduce testing frequency from 2x weekly to once a week at Hubbard Hill. We are on our way!!

The Elkhart County domino effect on us is real and in this case, positive. The positivity declines and the fact we have been COVID free for over two weeks enable us to explore lifting some resident restrictions. We are beginning discussions on how and when we may be able restore family visitations as well as communal dining.

Of course, we are mindful and focused on the new COVID-19 variants, where they are, how many persons impacted, the variant’s transmissibility and other matters all taken into consideration as we move forward.

VACCINES

We thought after the endless messaging surrounding vaccines, we would provide you some facts as we know them today:

  • According to a recently released report from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System from the CDC and FDA, only 10 cases of anaphylaxis have been detected after administration of 4,041,386 first doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. Nine of the 10 cases had a history of allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. No deaths were reported. Based upon this early monitoring, anaphylaxis appears to be a rare event following receipt of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.
  • Anaphylaxis is a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. It can occur within seconds or minutes of exposure to something you’re allergic to. Anaphylaxis causes your immune system to release a flood of chemicals that can cause you to go into shock — your blood pressure drops suddenly, and your airways narrow, blocking breathing.
  • This is particularly good news as we administer the Moderna vaccine here at Hubbard and have had no cases after the first shots administered on January 7th. This will hopefully help those who are fearful of allergic reactions to the vaccine make a more informed choice.
  • Here are a few positive statistics regarding how Indiana and Elkhart County are performing in vaccine distribution and administration:
Markets Administering 1st ShotTwo Full Doses Administered% Receiving Full Dose
Indianapolis Metro: 117,64831,42027%
Gary Metro: 31,9988,39026%
Fort Wayne Metro: 30,3659,89433%
Evansville Metro: 24,1515,94425%
South Bend Metro: 21,0415,22825%
Elkhart Metro: 13,8504,09630%
Indiana 562,084143,63826%
  • What this tells us is Elkhart ranks 6th in the state in the number of first shots given and 2nd in the number of full vaccines given (as a percentage of first shots given). So, we are doing very well for a market our size!
  • Also, please make note:
    • Persons 65 or over are now able to receive vaccines in Elkhart County beginning today.

COVID UPDATE

We are reporting NO NEW positive COVID-19 cases this entire WEEK!! That IS the best news we can give you! I want to thank every resident, staff member, and all who have served us entering the building for your continued vigilance and dedication to remaining COVID FREE!! It literally takes a village!

WHAT’S GOING ON?

As mentioned previously, we are not inclined to comment on work in process at the federal or state level-all of which is subject to change. Closer to home, we are incredibly pleased to announce Elkhart County positivity is now down to 8.3%!!!! That is down from a high approaching 20%!! That is a good sign, but we all must remain vigilant as the 3 new variants of the COVID virus have now reached the U.S. They have originated from UK, Brazil, and South Africa.

We have not commented specifically on these as details and specifics about each variant are constantly evolving. But it currently appears as though the Moderna vaccine is effective against all 3, with slightly less efficacy against the South African variant. We will keep you posted as we gather more definitive information. We are pleased our next Hubbard vaccine is next Thursday, February 4th!!

Coordinated efforts between the federal, state, and local governments is occurring as we speak, facilitating a more predictable flow of vaccines. The new standard is to advise states 3 weeks in advance of their anticipated distribution of vaccines moving forward. So, planning should go more smoothly.

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend-be safe. Not because of COVID, because of the SNOW!! 😊

We are reporting NO NEW positive COVID-19 cases again today!! We could not be more pleased for another Covid free day! We do NOT take this for granted, nor do we assume this is the new normal. As we all know, these results are 100% conditional. Conditional on everything we have been saying for over a year now-masks-hand washing-social distancing and now we add-get your vaccine as quickly as you are able.

Of the many things we are hearing, we are most pleased with Moderna publicly confirming what we knew to be true, and that is their vaccine is safe and effective against the new variants we are aware of today in our country. As more variants present themselves, we will keep you informed.

As we mentioned yesterday, there are many unknowns and moving parts, but rest assured we are on top of changing conditions or news which could or would directly impact Hubbard and YOU! The news cycle is such that what we hear in the morning could likely change by dinner time. We do not want to get into situations where we must back track or constantly update changes.

COVID UPDATE

We are reporting NO NEW positive COVID-19 cases today!! No one recuperating in isolation or working through the virus!

We continue to receive volumes of sound bites on the COVID-19 virus, vaccines, new-what experts are now calling, ‘’variants” (previously known as strains or mutations) and vaccine effectiveness. When new information comes along as “thoughts” or “beliefs” we choose to wait until they are substantiated until we report on them.

There are many unknowns and moving parts, but we continue our optimism as things rapidly evolve. The good news is things are moving along! Not as fast as any of us would like…but progress!

COVID UPDATE

We are reporting NO NEW positive COVID-19 cases today!! The positive staff case reported earlier this week ended up being a false positive after further testing. Have a great weekend!

We are hearing more and more coming down the road to recovery. We wait for confirmation on many things, but we are hopeful for the future as we are called to do. We will update you next week when we know more.

COVID UPDATE

We are reporting NO NEW positive COVID-19 cases today!!

HOW ARE YOU? 🤔

What a question! How are YOU?!👌 A question we’ve asked, been asked and pondered from time to time. But not a question we’ve asked of you a lot during the past YEAR!Yes, the first COVID-19 case was diagnosed a year ago this week.Whew.Seems like yesterday and yet ages ago. We’ve been all caught up in data, vaccines, positive cases, talking heads, doctors, negative tests, mitigation, containment…on and on.

I thought now was a good time to stop and ask, “how are YOU?”-because it’s important you know we care deeply how you are doing. Some answer “ok”, “pretty good”, “ok, given what’s going on”, or simply a shoulder shrug-because you may truly don’t know? Not many, “I’m GREAT!!’”.Gratitude, yes.Thankful they have not been touched by COVID personally. But by now, there is hardly anyone who has not been directly affected or does not know someone who has been touched by COVID-19.

One of our biggest concerns for everyone in the Pandemic is ISOLATION. It impacts each of us and It is not simply being physically alone.Cut off, solitary, detached, confined, secluded, lacking social contact, restricted, separate from, pulled apart, segregated, and of course…by oneself. But we also know, you can be in the middle of a crowded room and still feel isolated, it all hurts and makes us feel empty from time to time.

Along with that, what we know from experience is isolation can present itself physically, spiritually, mentally, emotionally, environmentally, or the worst, relational isolation. We want you to know we are here for you-We understand. As you navigate the waters of isolation you may be experiencing, know that we care.It is our calling and honorto support you through the fear, despair, and sadness of isolation.Sometimes, the best medicine to treat isolation is simply to hear “I am here for you,and you are not alone.”

WE all need a caring voice, or an elbow bump, a smile, a wink, a laugh, love, or reassurance you are ok, and it is going to be ok…we are here for you.For my staff. Our residents. Our families. Our caregivers. Our friends. We have ALL been touched by isolation. This has been an incredibly long and challenging year. But here we are.Still standing.Asking, “How are YOU?” and we sincerely want to know.Sometimes just knowing and believing that can get you through the day, or a moment.Don’t be afraid. We are family and we are right here… ❤

COVID UPDATE

We are reporting one positive staff COVID-19 case today. The staff member has been sent home for 10 days quarantine. The staff member works as an AL night nurse, meaning little resident contact.

GENERAL FACT UPDATES

  • What we know about vaccine distribution moving forward will become clear in the next few weeks as the new leadership assumes management of vaccine distribution. We will keep you posted.
  • As anticipated, the new fast spreading mutation of COVID-19 is moving rapidly, and some experts believe will ultimately overtake the current strain as the most widely spread.
    • Mutations in viruses — including the coronavirus causing the COVID-19 pandemic — are neither new nor unexpected. “All viruses mutate over time, some more than others. For example, flu viruses change often, which is why doctors recommend that you get a flu shot every year.”
    • What we are hearing is the new strain is 50%+ more contagious. What that means to you is you could catch it faster than the current strain. It gets into your body faster and enters your host cells easier, thereby transmitting faster.
    • So far, the news is good. Although the mutated coronavirus may spread faster from person to person, it does not appear any more likely to cause severe disease or death: “We are not seeing any indication that the new strain is more virulent or dangerous in terms of causing more severe COVID-19 disease.”
    • The good news is the experts at Moderna have told us that generally speaking, as the core virus is unchanged, the current Moderna vaccine will be safe and effective for the new fast-moving strain. “There is no demonstration yet that these strains are biologically different in ways that would require any change in current recommendations meant to limit the spread of COVID-19.”
    • People who receive a COVID-19 vaccine are 20X less likely to become infected with COVID-19 and thus less likely to experience potential hospitalizations related to the virus.
  • Folks, we are doing our absolute best to keep you informed as knowledge empowers! There is

A LOT out there and we want you armed with every new factual piece of information that is relevant and understand the potential impact on everyone at Hubbard. Choices are personal and we want you to have all the tools to make choices that are best for you!

COVID UPDATE

We are reporting no positive COVID-19 cases today! We cannot underscore what a significant accomplishment this week has been with NO POSITIVE COVID-19 cases to report! We are in the post-holiday window of virus spread and we have remained COVID free this week. We do not take it for granted as unfortunately Elkhart County has once again been reclassified as a red zone in the state due to an increase in the incidence. Vigilance is a must to keep everyone safe. We are not through this and the vaccine is not going to have a positive impact on these numbers in the near term.

We want to remind you again: vaccines=immunity; masks=environmental protection. Together, you have the best chance of mitigating your risk of contracting COVID-19 along with social distancing and washing your hands. Each by themselves is not enough.

VACCINES
We have been fortunate to have had access to the product team at Moderna to answer questions about the vaccine which have arisen over the past few months. We again have spoken to them again this week to answer some of your most recent questions. Rather than take them down, we are leaving them up one more day as there are people who have not had the opportunity to review these questions and answers.

VACCINES

We have been fortunate to have had access to the product team at Moderna to answer questions about the vaccine which have arisen over the past few months. We again have spoken with them this week to answer some of your most recent questions.

HUBBARD HILL
MODERNA VACCINE Q&A

01.12.21

QUESTION: I have had a shot (and/or 2nd shot). When will it start to take effect and provide me immunity from COVID-19? When does that translate to freedom?

ANSWER: The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine is still in ongoing clinical trials. The vaccine which is being administered is under Health and Human Services and FDA EUA and as such, have insufficient data in this emergency distribution to predict such things as when one might not have to wear a mask and get back to some semblance of “freedom”. The ongoing clinical trial which was already in place will deliver data that will provide more predictability. We want to remind you the COVID 19 vaccine has not yet received FDA approval only EUA approval.

  • QUESTION: What are the implications of EUA approval only?
  • ANSWER: The EUA mandatory hurdle to receive approval is to be proven safe and effective for the prevention of COVID 19. However, in an emergency as we are currently experiencing, where there is NO OTHER solution and significant deaths may/are occurring, the following additional benchmark is established: a) the data and known benefits of the vaccine significantly outweigh known potential risks of the vaccine. The long-term safety and duration of immunity to COVID is yet unknown for any of the vaccines available to date. There are currently NO FDA approved vaccines today.
  • QUESTION: Were any clinical trial short cuts or steps omitted for Operation Warp Speed?
  • ANSWER: None. The government solicited companies with vaccines in the pipeline to make the COVID-19 vaccine “priority 1” in the organizations and dedicate appropriate resources. There was no suggestion that short cuts or omissions be made to accomplish this. The same clinical protocol of number of subjects, time, and quantitative measure were in place. Under the EUA, HHS funded additional personnel, PPE’s, and any other necessary resources to field the EUA clinical trial and ready it for launch asap. Unlike traditional clinical trials, there was no shortage or difficulty in enrolling and populating the clinical trial sample size given the broadscale spread across the country. Populating an appropriate trial sample can take months normally. Once we had the sample, the clinical trial was fielded, and results obtained.  It is the same clinical trial methodology.  We normally have no need to accelerate it in this way.
  • QUESTION: What happened after the trial was completed?
  • ANSWER: Once the clinical trials were completed, they were thoroughly reviewed at Moderna. At that point they were submitted to the FDA for consideration for EUA purposes. As no other alternatives of FDA approved vaccines are available and the criterion was met, they moved forward.
  • QUESTION: Why do I have to still wear a mask after 2 shots?
  • ANSWER: As mentioned, until the ongoing clinical trials are completed, we are unable to predict the prevention or immunity duration of the vaccine, e.g., how long will it keep you protected. We currently have no projections as to what exactly that time frame is (e.g., will you have to have an annual vaccine in the future?)  As the protection window of the vaccine is unknown, a mask is still required as you could transmit or contract the virus. The duration period is being aggressively studied at this time.
  • QUESTION: Will you be studying the impact of the general population who have received vaccines under the EUA?
  • ANSWER: No, we are not. But the FDA and CDC will be monitoring for adverse effects and protection duration.
  • QUESTION: I don’t understand the EUA process?
  • ANSWER: The simplest way to look at it is without the COVID-19 pandemic and how it ravaged the country, there would be no need for the EUA. Typically, a clinical trial window would have been sufficient. The pandemic CAUSED the EUA to be activated. Given the spread and gravity of the situation, and potential loss of lives-the HHS put whatever tools they need in play to save lives.
  • QUESTION: If I still must wear a mask and there are still unknowns, why bother getting a shot?
  • ANSWER: Vaccines have been and continue to be a critically important part of our public health care system. For years throughout our history, vaccines have saved lives just as we will be doing today. Vaccines for polio, smallpox and many, many other diseases have saved lives. Simply stated: vaccines=immunity; masks=additional protection. Without immunity, the impact of this virus would present a high risk.
  • QUESTION: Are there any major differences between the Pfizer vaccine and Moderna, and if so, what are they/
  • ANSWER: We (Moderna) do not comment on any other manufacturer’s product in any way.  If people would like to understand the differences such as ingredients, how administered, time between doses, efficacy, safety, etc. We suggest you contact your vaccine or healthcare provider for that information.

NOTE: The general consensus in the literature search among healthcare professionals, scientists, and government experts are that Pfizer and Moderna are widely considered to be very similar.

  • QUESTION: What happens if I miss my second injection?
  • ANSWER: You should have made an appointment one month to the day from your first injection.  If you cannot make one month, then 4 weeks. If you missed it and can get it in 5 or more days, go ahead and get the vaccine. Each day you miss beyond your scheduled date compromises the efficacy a little bit-and you want the full benefit of the vaccine.

COVID UPDATE

We are reporting no positive COVID-19 cases today! Our thoughts? Stay the course!!

VACCINES

We are pleased to report we have vaccinated the following Hubbard Hill staff and residents on 1/7/21:

  • We vaccinated 93% of all residents! We will finish all eligible and those desiring the vaccine on 2/4/21
  • As we mentioned when we began, we are staggering our staff vaccines per CDC guidance. So, we have vaccinated 41% of our staff and the balance will be vaccinated on 2/4/21.

HAVING THE EAR

We are pleased to share that Patrick was selected along with 9 other business leaders in Elkhart to participate on a Zoom call with Indiana Senator Todd Young yesterday. The purpose of the call was for business leaders to share the impact of COVID-19 on their businesses and for Senator Young to share plans regarding COVID-19 moving forward.

We will be sharing detail this week, but it’s always good to have a voice and the ear of key decision makers!

COVID UPDATE

We are reporting no positive COVID-19 cases today. The previously reported cases from last week remain in quarantine. This is particularly good news as the larger community is beginning to feel the post-holiday spread. Positive cases are creeping back up so please remain vigilant and compliant. And as a reminder, the fast-spreading mutation of the original COVID-19 virus has now hit Indiana.

Said State Health Commissioner, Dr. Kris Box, “It’s common for viruses to mutate, and we are seeing that occur with COVID-19. Because this strain of the virus can be transmitted more easily, it’s more important than ever that Hoosiers continue to wear their masks, practice social distancing, maintain good hygiene and get vaccinated when they are eligible.”

COVID & VACCINES

The COVID-19 virus rages on across the country. It is difficult to watch the crises across the country with dwindling resources and vaccines not keeping up. Vaccine distribution and administration levels vary widely across states as each state institutes their own administration protocols.

We are fortunate Indiana is counted as one of the states doing a reasonably good job both in receiving sufficient vaccines and getting them into the arms of eligible persons. Indiana has complied with the federal mandate of vaccinating front line workers and LTC facilities first and is still in process. People age 80+ began vaccines today. Progress!

As a reminder for Independent Living residents, below is the information for persons 80 and older to get their COVID-19 vaccine:

COVID

We are reporting one positive staff member today who has already been quarantined at home due to family exposure.

VACCINES

As mentioned yesterday, our initial vaccine administration event went off without a hitch and we have just a couple of people with minor side effects that are resolving.

Friends, for those of you who are weighing the risks of having the vaccine versus getting COVID-19, let me share some new facts we have gathered.

As I mentioned in an earlier post this week, we are now observing first-hand the longer-term impact of the virus on the overall health of our residents, staff, and their families who have contracted COVID. For some, it has been several months since they had the virus, and are now experiencing significant health issues. Some are pretty serious.

Across the country, this trend has become so widespread people who have been negatively affected by COVID-19 are now called “Long-Haulers”. Named appropriately by physicians who are treating this phenomenon daily. In fact, it has become so widespread specialized clinics are opening called “Long-Hauler Clinics/Care” to accommodate these growing numbers. The belief that getting the virus and walking away seemingly unscathed is proving to be untrue. This is happening to patients young and old, healthy, and persons with previous conditions. Physicians are saying these people may never be the same again.

They are suffering anything from eyesight loss, chronic ringing ears, headaches, kidney issues, cardiovascular issues, pulmonary issues, rashes, chronic fatigue, brain fog, compromised cognition, and lack of ability to have significant activity.

Additionally, the new super spreader mutation of COVID (from the UK) is now in even more states and is certain to reach Indiana. It is 50-70% more contagious than the original strain. So, without running the risk of sounding “preachy” or “over the top”, I urge you to consider all the facts when weighing the risks of a vaccine versus contracting COVID-19. We had people who changed their minds and opted into receiving the vaccine yesterday.

It is my goal that all clearly understand the growing pool of knowledge so you are fully informed as you each weigh the perceived risks of the vaccine vs contracting COVID– It remains your personal choice.

WHAT A GIFT—A BRAND NEW YEAR!

Well friends, here we are! The recipients of a brand-new year!! I, for one, feel good about this year and what potential awaits us! I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season and is ready to join us on the 2021 adventure!! We are ready to go!

COVID

We report one positive resident case in Healthcare with the resident now in the Covid Unit. No other cases reported.

CURRENT SITUATION

Entering this year, we want to begin on a positive note. And we have one: vaccines!! Whereas we had no “light” at the end of the tunnel for the longest time in 2020, we have one now! It’s anyone’s guess when that light will shine fully upon us all, but we have faith—it will!

A few words about COVID-19. I’m certain you saw plenty of news reports over the holiday which did not paint a very pretty picture of the situation relative to COVID. Nursing shortages, ICU beds at capacity, increasing deaths, and cases increasing daily. That is the reality. But there is another reality we have begun to experience over the past 3-4 months at Hubbard.

Perhaps some of you may feel if you contract the COVID-19 virus, it really isn’t that serious and you won’t die from it. And statistically speaking, you’re probably right. But I want to warn you all that this is a dangerous virus and may have a lasting impact on your health.

Over the past 3-4 months, we have seen and observed first-hand the emergence of the long-lasting impact and diminished health of residents, staff, and family of staff who has had COVID-19 in 2020. Many who have had the virus are simply not the same. They have not fully rebounded after these many months and their overall health and immune systems seem to have lasting effects. Not only residents but our staff members. We know from experience you simply do not “walk away” from COVID clean, unscathed. New, and previously undetected health complications have touched staff and family members of staff with more frequency. These are people who in the short term, appeared to have weathered the storm-but have not.

So, friends, I caution you. In this new year, recommit yourselves to compliance with the guidance we have been given. We are at least “in the game” toward recovery—don’t take an avoidable risk with the notion that perhaps it isn’t that big a deal- it is!!

NEW COVID MUTATION

No shortage of news regarding the newly discovered COVID strain first detected in the UK. Now, it has arrived in the US in California, Colorado, and Florida. It is safe to say it will likely arrive here at some point.

This one is different. It is highly contagious, more so than the initial strain. It doesn’t appear you will experience “a worse” case of COVID. But the likelihood you will contract it has increased. The best guidance we have now is to be compliant: wear your mask, wash your hands, avoid large groups, and continue social distancing-you will significantly reduce your risk versus those who do not.

A picture painted by a physician to illustrate the highly contagious nature of this strain is this: If you are in a large room standing on one side and someone on the other side is smoking and you smell it-that is the contagious nature of this strain. So, just stay compliant—that’s the best advice we have!

VACCINE UPDATE

This is our week!!! The first group of vaccines will be administered this Thursday, January 7th!! Praise the Lord! We will be vaccinating both staff and residents. We are adhering to suggested CDC guidance and staggering our staff member’s vaccines. We have two additional future dates: February 4th and March 4th. The second staff group will receive their first vaccine on February 4th. We are fortunate to have these 2 windows to stagger the vaccine!

Also, I would like to clarify the status of Independent Living residents who reside in our Village. As you know, Independent Living residents are not covered under our A/L, Healthcare, and LWC state licensure. As such, we are not licensed to administer healthcare to IL residents-and consequently, not a vaccine. We are in the process of gathering guidance for IL residents enabling you to understand when and where you may receive your vaccine. We hope to have this compiled for tomorrow’s post so you may plan accordingly. We are here for you if you have any questions!
