COVID UPDATE:  Effective Immediately, 4/21/21:

Good evening friends,

Well, the only thing that is certain-is that nothing is certain!  But in this case-it’s all good!    As we mentioned just two days ago, we were mandated per ISDH directives to suspend visitation due to our staff positive case.  That was then, this is now!

We complied with the initial directive and at the same time submitted an appeal with the state on your behalf and they have reversed their decision and we are once again OPEN FOR VISITATION AND EXCURSIONS!  Communal dining is also restored! 

EFFECTIVE immediately, Assisted Living and Healthcare visitation and excursions are restored to the previously published days and times:

• Daily: 9-11:30am, 1-4:30pm and 6-7:30pm
• 2-Guests at a time.  All visitors must be over age 14.
• Visit to take place in resident’s room (AL or Rehab) or a resident’s private room in Healthcare.
• Visitors to semi-private rooms in Healthcare must check in for location visiting options at Nurse’s Station.
• On nice weather days, visitation with any resident may be held outdoors in one of our beautiful garden areas.
• Visitors MUST remain in designated areas—Do not mingle or visit other residents.
• If visiting two different residents, visitor must check out of 1^st visit and re-check in at the Front Registration area.
• Masks to be worn at all times by resident AND visitor.
• Masks must be worn properly over nose AND mouth.
• No Food or Drink during the visit that would require removing of a mask.
• Strive to maintain Social Distancing of 6’ between resident AND visitor.
• Sanitize/Wash hands before and after visit.

Assisted Living and Healthcare Excursions with Family Members:

• 9am to 7pm Daily.
• See instructions at Front Desk.
• The Living Wisdom Center/Dementia visitation remains suspended until 4/27.

COVID UPDATE: Effective Immediately, 4/20/21:

Good evening friends,

Unfortunately, we are back to report another positive staff COVID-19 result. The person was asymptomatic and is feeling well, but the test was positive. Again, the staff member is quarantined at home for the mandatory 10-day period. It is our hope we will successfully keep this case contained as we have in the past.

Consequently, we must suspend Assisted Living and Healthcare family visitation and excursions at once and continue through Monday, May 3^rd. All visitation between Assisted Living and Healthcare residents is also suspended. We want to restore the visitation and excursions we have all enjoyed as quickly as possible.

Assisted Living Dining

Assisted Living dining will continue in the Woodside Dining Room until Tuesday, 4/27 at such time we will restore dining in the Courtside Dining Room. The delay is due to the main kitchen improvements and the additional time required to restore full operation. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

COVID UPDATE

Welcome back, friends. Well not honestly. Unfortunately, we are reporting one new positive staff COVID case today in the LWC. The member was identified yesterday upon testing and confirmed with the more rigorous test as well. The staff member is quarantined at home for 10 days and all other staff and residents have been tested and all tested negative. Unfortunately, LWC residents and staff must once again be in quarantine for 14 days and visitation is suspended. Unfortunate to say the least-and devastating to all involved.

We want to remind you, we are not through this yet folks. Vaccinations are proceeding, but cases in Elkhart County are once again above 10% which means we return to staff testing twice a week from once a week. This is not a good trend friend. We strongly urge you to continue wearing your mask when in public places where you are not familiar with the person(s) standing or sitting within 6 feet of you. Remember, the vaccines provide 94-96% immunity from COVID, but because it is not 100%, we still are required to wear masks and PPE’s at all times. Until we reach herd immunity-you are still at risk.

We’re sure you have heard various reports on the news, but the only one that matters is what’s happening right here in Elkhart/St. Joseph county. And the trends are not good! Please remain vigilant. We are so awfully close, but if another outbreak starts, we will go right back where we were.

We are reporting NO NEW positive COVID-19 cases today!!

Hello friends,

We have been informed by the ISDH we are no longer required to provide daily updates given the low positivity incidence in Elkhart and zero reported cases at Hubbard for an extended period. So you will not see a daily post here on our website any longer and may safely assume we remain COVID-free unless notified.

However, you may rest assured we WILL post should we experience:

• New directives from the ISDH or CDC
• Any new vaccine guidance which may be appropriate
• Any visitation guidance which may be needed
• The incidence in Elkhart county begins increase
• We have a confirmed case at Hubbard Hill
• Or ANY time sensitive announcements or guidance you may need to know

So continue to visit us on line for many other HH news announcements or COVID alerts.

NEW ASSISTED LIVING AND HEALTHCARE VISITATION: EFFECTIVE 3/18/21

As advocates for increasing family connections, we are obviously pleased to provide these expanded opportunities. As you are likely aware, the ISDH has just issued new guidance for visitation and off campus excursions this week. We continue to have serious concerns regarding the risks associated with these directives. As you also are aware, we are licensed to operate as a health facility by the Indiana State Department of Health. As such, we must comply with ISDH directives to the best of our ability.

We simply want to share our concerns with you to enable you to make informed decisions. These new State mandates are not optimal in mitigation of COVID and consequently we are asking you to do your part to help us mitigate the inherent risks of these directives with your compliance during your visits and excursions. We thank you in advance for your cooperation and hope you enjoy your times together.

Please understand that a reoccurrence of COVID has a dramatic impact on our entire Community. Please do your part to keep us on the path to continued freedom.

We were advised by the Indiana Department of Health late last week of the new directive requiring open visitation for in room resident visitation with CDC infection control principles in place. We have very mixed emotions. We have wanted nothing more than to have this day arrive-but at the right time with mitigated risk to the health and safety to everyone involved. As we are always transparent with you, we do not believe we are there yet as a community.

With looming variants, a 4^th COVID phase, insufficient public vaccination levels to be safe, and a lack of uniform, sustainable community compliance levels we see risk in this directive. Importantly, we do not have adequate resources to execute this directive at a high level and mitigate the risk we believe is necessary. Quite simply, we do not believe we are out of the woods yet.

As advocates for increasing family connections, we are obviously pleased to provide this opportunity. As you know, we have rigorously followed CDC and ISDH directives throughout the pandemic. However, this directive from the ISDH is inconsistent with the CDC directives we continue to support and follow. We continually assess ongoing risks and feel the timing of this directive is premature.

We simply wanted to share our concerns with you to enable you to make an informed decision. This is not optimal and consequently are asking you to do your part to help us mitigate the inherent risks of this directive with your compliance during your visit. • Visitation Parameters for Assisted Living and Healthcare

• Visitation begins: 3/9/21

New Visitation Hours:

• Monday through Friday 1-5pm and 6-7pm
• Saturday and Sunday 1-5pm

Visitation Scheduling:

• Scheduled visitation is 1-Hour
• Visitation time must be scheduled by calling the Hubbard Hill Front Desk.
  • Please call between 1-5 p.m., Monday-Friday, 574-295-6260

Visitation Guidelines:

• Two Guests maximum are allowed at one time (Age 14 and Older).
• Scheduled guests must check-in at the front desk with temperature taken and COVID questionnaires.
• After Check-In, guests must go directly to resident’s room and remain there for visit.
  • Healthcare residents living in semiprivate rooms will be directed to a common area for their visit unless their roommate agrees to leave the room.
• There will be no food or drinks during the visit which would require the removal of masks.

Mandatory COVID precautions MUST be followed during the entire visit.

**Masks MUST be worn properly by resident and guests

**Social distancing of 6’ between resident and guests

** Hand washing or sanitizing before and after visit

Failure to follow these parameters could result in the loss of visitation privileges

and 14-day quarantine of resident. Guests must sign-out at Front Desk before leaving.

COVID UPDATE

We are reporting NO NEW positive COVID-19 cases today!!

TO DO OR NOT TO DO

Just when we thought the pandemic wild, wild, west could not get any more confusing or unpredictable, it does. However, it is neither appropriate nor our role as healthcare professionals to weigh in or comment on decisions made by any number of federal or state officials, healthcare workers, or even private citizens. The simple truth is the number of variables that are considered for decisions made all over this country daily is huge. 

Literally, national, regional, states, counties, cities, towns, and yes, individual households should make choices and decisions based upon what is going on closest to YOU, your life-not across the country, not even the next town over. In YOUR WORLD. Who has/have had COVID? How many cases in your area? Going up or down? Impact of the new variants headed our way? Who has had the vaccine? Who is compliant with guidelines?

And that is exactly what we strive to do every day to protect the health, safety, and quality of life of our staff and residents. It’s kind of like a marriage, good times and bad, in sickness and in health. We have been tasked to pay attention to our sphere of influence…right here at Hubbard. What’s happening in Seattle doesn’t change our world here at Hubbard Hill. Nor should it. Our resident’s health and safety has been and always will be our #1 priority.

So, we pay attention. We pay close attention to what is happening at Hubbard-first and foremost. We pay attention to Elkhart, Nappanee, Bristol, Goshen, Mishawaka, Elkhart County, District 2, the state of Indiana-and that’s as far as we go. Beyond that, we listen to the voices of the professionals whose guidance we trust and value.

You may disagree, but all we know is that it’s worked for us so far. We are getting closer by the day friends. Let’s hang tough together and know we will all cross the finish line together. We pray for the entire country, that decisions made nationwide will all contribute to the ultimate end of this pandemic. That’s all that we can do here in our world- and His.

COVID UPDATE

THE FALSE DILEMMA OF POST-VACCINATION RISK

We see and read more and more viewpoints published regarding the risk of being vaccinated and still transmitting or getting the virus. It is confusing to say the least and hopeful at best. In a recent assessment by James Hamblin, M.D. of the Yale School of Public Health, Dr. Hamblin describes as simply as we have seen the current situation and what we might expect, how it may come to pass, and our futures in a nutshell. He tries to drill it down as simply as we can today…

In a closing excerpt of his summary entitled, “The False Dilemma of Post-Vaccination Risk”, Dr. Hamblin states,

…” All of the clinical and trial data and projections are academic. Whatever trial data might arrive in the coming months won’t change practical advice: As long as a lot of virus is still circulating around a community and many people remain unvaccinated, the mere fact that some have protection will not mean that it’s responsible for them to forgo precautions and do whatever they like.

A different kind of data, though, will offer that reassurance and certainty. This is what we’re really waiting on. We will absolutely get to a point when we can say that vaccinated people don’t need to wear masks, but that will be driven largely by changes in the number of cases, and in the vaccination rate. The sooner we can drive the former down and the latter up, the sooner normalcy returns. As populations draw closer to herd immunity, the chance of a vaccinated person both carrying the virus and coming into close contact with a nonimmune person will become so low that the guidelines will change. But as long as the virus remains omnipresent, the risk of getting infected (and transmitting) the virus after being vaccinated remains too high to countenance.

This message need not be seen as pessimistic or ambiguous. It tells us very clearly that our social lives can resume, but only when the whole community is ready. The turning point does not arrive for individuals, one by one, as soon as they’re vaccinated; it comes for all of us at once, when a population becomes immune. How quickly this occurs depends on how reliably those vaccines reduce transmission. But it will primarily be a function of how quickly people get access to vaccines, how much immunity already exists in a population, and how much attention is given to basic preventative measures that should never go away, such as well-ventilated workspaces and responsible sick leave policies. Much of this is in our hands now. We are not waiting on a clinical study; we are waiting on one another.
